The Mercedes-Benz 170 S is a luxury car produced by Mercedes-Benz between 1949 and 1955 in various forms using gasoline and diesel. It was initially offered with a 1.8-liter version of the 1.7-liter M136 engine and four in-line cylinders used in the slightly smaller production type 170 V.

It was the first Mercedes-Benz to carry in its name the suffix “S” (for the Sonder model (Special model), which denotes a superior level of comfort and quality and, as such, its intended market was owners of successful companies and company directors.

The 170 S was launched in May 1949, initially sharing the chassis number of the W136 170 V and resembling it. However, in many ways, it was more directly a development of the six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz 230

The first update of the 170 S took place in January 1952, moving further away from the 170 V with its own W191 chassis number.

The introduction of Mercedes in the previous year of the M180 model of 2.2 liters and six cylinders M180 with Mercedes-Benz W187 luxury 220 engine, positioned between the 170 S and the flagship of the company 3.0-liter Mercedes-Benz W186 Adenauer , damaged the luxury niche of the 170 S four-cylinder.

With the arrival of the brand new 1.8 liter Mercedes-Benz W120 180 "Ponton" in 1953, the 170 S was discontinued and the 170 S-V employed the larger engine of the S 170, but the slightly smaller body of the 170 V was introduced. It stopped production in 1955.
