The relatives of journalist Ibraimo Mbaruco, from Palma, Cabo Delgado, are irritated by what they consider the authorities' “frightening and inhuman silence” in investigating his disappearance.

“We are concerned, it is a long time (from disappearance),” the journalist's brother, Juma Mbaruco, tells VOA.

Juma's frustration is aggravated by the fact that his brother's phones have apparently recently been signaled.

“Cell phones have been turned off since April 10, and they only called again on June 8 and 9,” says Juma.

After noting that the phones had a signal, Juma continues, “I told the investigator of the National Criminal Investigation Service (sernic), who promised to do a job and since then he hasn't said anything else.”

The various calls made were not answered and Juma is surprised that the authorities did not respond even after the new clue.

This Tuesday, June 30, VOA contacted, unsuccessfully, Augusto Guta, spokesman for the provincial police command of Cabo Delgado, through the number he usually uses in relations with the press.

Despite the authorities' denounced silence, the Mozambican office of the Southern African Social Communication Institute (Misa-Mozambique) says that it remains committed to the search for the truth about Ibraimo Mbaraco's disappearance.

Ernesto Nhanale, executive director of this press freedom organization, says a new investigation is underway to clarify the journalist's disappearance, which is due to be completed next week.
